What To Expect
We are going to Namibia – Land of the Brave, in September . . .
Heading to the small coastal town and domestic seaport of Port Nolloth on the Atlantic Ocean, we stop on route in the copper mining town of Okiep for lunch. Tonight, we meet the local riders over a seafood dinner with a rider briefing and last minutes checks before we head off on the gravel sections, and so the Namibian adventure begins.
We enter Namibia via the Octha cable ferry at Sendelingsdrift pontoon. Taking a scenic road all along the Orange River with a sandy patch or two, taking a break at Ais-Ais, where will take a dip in the healing hot waters before making our way towards the third largest canyon in the world – Fish River Canyon.
Direction Aus today, stopping on route at the Fish River Canyon viewpoint and the Canyon Farmyard for the first of the many ‘famous’ apple cakes Namibia has to offer – Apfel Streuselkuchen. Tonight, we experience true German & Namibian hospitality on the veranda at the Bahnhof Hotel.
Heading back towards the coast, we stop to tour the ghost town of Kolmanskop an amazing photo opportunity, before reaching the town, which is both on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean and in the middle of the desert. Named after Adolf Lüderitz, founder of the German Southwest Africa colony, in time to explore this historical town offering superb German architecture.
We will be looking out for the wild Garub Desert Horses on route to our first stop, Helmeringshausen restaurant & beer garden for “The best apple pie in Namibia”, Apple Crumble, the second of the ‘famous’ apple cakes Namibia has to offer.
After some amazing gravel roads with unlimited vistas, we arrive at Betta an oasis situated on the beautiful South-Western outback of the Namibian Desert. A stopover to fuel your tank… and our stopover in the natural stone chalet. Where we will experience Namibian nights and admire a kaleidoscope of stars.
An early start sees the famous red dunes of Sossusvlei on the cards today, the ever-changing gravel roads take us to Sesriem, the entrance gate to Sossusvlei where we leave our bikes and take a shuttle to the dunes where you will have the opportunity to climb the dunes for the energetic traveler. In the afternoon we head to the settlement of Solitaire that has the most fascinating history. The town boast everything that a weary traveler requires from a pool, restaurant with cold beers, a tyre repair shop and even the most amazing bakery, and the third of Namibia’s apple cakes – Apfelstrudel, the most delicious apple strudel in town.
Another clear desert morning sees us heading north crossing the Tropic of Capricorn, via the spectacular winding gravel passes to the viewpoints of the Naukluft National Park ending up in the Walvisbay Harbour for a seafood lunch. Spotting Flamingos is on the cards for the afternoon thereafter we make our way on the coastal salt road to Swakopmund, offering cool climate and misty mornings, in this coastal town wedged between the Atlantic Ocean and the never-ending dunes of Namibia.
Today is a rest day of sorts, as we are still experiencing an adrenaline rush as we explore some of the tallest dunes on quad bikes. The afternoon is spent at leisure exploring what Swakopmund has to offer, tonight we dine in an authentic German restaurant, beer, eisbein and wurst are on the cards.
Heading inland via the Mountains of the Moonscapes, a site that could easily be used as a Star Wars set, we visit Welwitschia Mirabilis, is a long-aged plant with a lifespan of about 400 to 1500 years that is only found in Namibia and Angola. After a refreshment stop at the Goanikontes Oasis on the Swakop River we head to the Famous Namibian Spitzkoppe, for a tented camp experience soaking up the atmosphere of the red mountains at sunset, leading on to a braai with a million stars to keep us company.
Today is sadly the last day of the tour although there is still a lot to see, starting of early with amazing hikes and bushman painting sites to explore before breakfast. After bidding the majestic Spitzkoppe farewell we head to Windhoek on more gravel routes via Bosua Pass stopping for a snack lunch at the viewpoint overlooking the plains below the Khomas Hoghland Mountain range. Tonight, we celebrate and relive our experiences together at a Windhoek institution, Joe’s Beerhouse for more good beers and food.
Heading back to home today offers a few options: fly home from Windhoek airport and let SVRA arrange shipping of your bike, take the shortest route home via Botswana or add a few extra days and make it a leisurely trip home.
