Overview
This motorcycle tour to Lesotho will be an exhilarating and scenic adventure, offering the chance to experience the rugged beauty of one of the most unique and remote countries in Southern Africa. Lesotho, often referred to as the “Kingdom in the Sky,” is a landlocked country completely surrounded by South Africa, and it’s known for its dramatic landscapes, high-altitude mountain ranges, and remote villages.
The Journey Begins:
The ride starts in South Africa, in the majestic Witteberg Mountains of the Eastern Free State, at the secluded Moolmanshoek Private Game Reserve. From there, we journey through Lesotho from the bottom to the SANI TOP. Taking you through a mix of tarmac twisties and gravel routes, popular with motorcyclists looking for a mix of challenges and scenic beauty. The ride itself is part of the thrill, with stunning views of rolling hills, farmlands, and the occasional small village.
Crossing the Border:
Entering Lesotho is fairly straightforward, and once you cross the border, the real adventure begins. You’ll notice the change in altitude as you head up into the mountains. The country’s average altitude is over 2,000 meters (6,500 feet).
Scenic Routes:
Lesotho is known for its breath-taking views, especially when you’re on a motorcycle. Some of the key spots we visit include:
- Malealea Lodge: A popular destination for those looking to experience the traditional side of Lesotho, Malealea Lodge is nestled deep in the mountains. The roads around this area are mostly gravel, and you’ll pass by small Basotho villages with mud huts.
- Semonkong: meaning “Place of Smoke”, was established in the 1880s as a refuge for Basotho displaced by the Basuto Gun War. Located in a valley on the banks of the Maletsunyane River, this Lesotho lodge is encircled by peaks measuring some 3 000 metres. The rustic stone-and-thatch lodge offers an elegant mountain retreat from which to explore the area including the mighty Maletsunyane Falls is the second highest single-drop waterfall in Africa. By nightfall, the Duck and Donkey Tavern will be our meeting spot for a wholesome, home-cooked meal, recounting stories of our day over a chilled Maluti beer, before retreating to the fireplace in some of our stone rondavels.
- Mohale Dam: A made-made phenomenon, which was completed in 2003, situated 91km from Maseru. It is southwest of Katse Dam and almost doubles the water supply to South Africa through an inter-connecting tunnel into the Katse reservoir.
- Sani Pass: One of the most famous and challenging routes in the region, this steep, winding pass will give you a heart-racing ride. It’s particularly popular for motorcycle tours, but it’s not for the faint of heart—prepare for sharp turns, loose gravel, and some intense climbs. At the top, we’ll be rewarded with incredible views of the Drakensberg Mountains, and where we will be exiting Lesotho on this tour.
- Midlands Meander: In the heart of KwaZulu-Natal, is a collection of arranged tourist routes that offer visitors hospitality in truly beautiful surroundings. Offering stunning accommodation, arts and crafts, fine cuisine and so much more! Our last night of the tour will be in Nottingham Road known as the ‘heart’ of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands Meander due to its second-to-none hospitality.
The Culture:
Riding through Lesotho, you’ll encounter a fascinating blend of cultures. The Basotho people have a rich history, and you might stop along the way to interact with locals. In many parts of the country, people live much as they have for centuries, with farming, traditional crafts, and pastoral life being central to the way of life.
Accommodation and Amenities:
The accommodation is remote we’ll be staying in small, cozy lodges in some of the most serene spots you can imagine. Be prepared for the high-altitude weather, as it can get quite chilly, especially in the evenings.
Tour Vibe:
Expect epic camaraderie, incredible scenery, and a sense of freedom as you ride through one of Africa’s most unique landscapes. The combination of excellent riding, cultural immersion, and breath-taking views ensures that every day is an adventure. The group atmosphere with old and new friends makes for great company along the way.
This is definitely one of those rides that blends thrilling motorcycling with a sense of discovery and adventure. The kind of journey that makes for lifelong memories.
