This river flows from Lesotho into South Africa and Namibia. It begins in the mountains of Lesotho, 10,800 feet (3,300 meters) above sea level, on a plateau located between the Drakensberg range and the Maloti Mountains. The river provides fresh water for crop irrigation and drinking. The Orange River is also used to generate power. The Orange River Project and the Lesotho Highlands Water Project feature many dams and tunnels to help store and transfer water from the Orange River. The Gariep Dam is the largest dam on the river.The Orange River plays an important role in the South African economy by providing water for irrigation and hydroelectric power. The river was named the Orange River in honour of the Dutch ruling family, the House of Orange, by the Dutch explorer Robert Jacob Gordon.

Richtersveld is within the Namakwa District Municipality, in the Northern Cape province of South Africa. The municipality is named after Reverend W Richter, a Dutch missionary from the 20th century who opened a mission station in Kuboes. The ǀAi-ǀAis/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park is a peace park straddling the border between South Africa and Namibia. It was formed in 2003 by combining the Namibian ǀAi-ǀAis Hot Springs Game Park and the South African Richtersveld National Park.
Pella is an oasis in Namakwa in the Northern Cape province of South Africa. Earlier known as Cammas Fonteyn, the spring was used by a nearby stronghold of San people. Klein Pella – a Beautiful guest house on the biggest date farm in the Southern Hemisphere, covering 18,000 hectares on the Orange River between Pofadder and the Aggenys mine.
Port Nolloth is a town and small domestic seaport in the Namaqualand region on the northwestern coast of South Africa, 144 kilometres northwest of Springbok. It is the seat of the Richtersveld Local Municipality.
